"Sex Madness" Classic Movie Screens at Village Theater March 9

The 1938 classic "Sex Madness" will screen on Saturday, March 9 at 7:00 p.m. at the Village Theater, 2113 E. 11th Street, Davenport, Iowa.  A panel discussion will follow the film. $5/pp.  (Rated--not for children)

Film Synopsis:

The film centers on Paul Lorenz, a "concerned citizen" alarmed at the spread of venereal diseases such as syphilis and gonorrhea. However, at a New York City burlesque show, several protagonists are more intent on engagement in sexual pleasure, regardless of the subsequent costs. They include Paul's own son Tom, burlesque dancer Sheila Wayne (who has syphilis), and two secretaries, lesbian Peggy and Betty, whom she is trying to seduce. However, one figure is not amongst them- Millicent Hamilton, a reformed former burlesque dancer. Millicent won a beauty contest in her hometown, which led her to New York, but a "casting couch" sexual encounter led her to contract syphilis. Millicent is told by her physician, Dr. Hamilton, that her condition can be cured, but only after slow, and painstaking treatment, and she should reject quack pseudo-cures. Millicent consents to this, eager to return to her home town and marry her boyfriend, Wendell- but will she heed the doctor's warnings? And what will the consequences be if she does not?

Wild parties, lesbianism, and premarital sex are some of the forms of 'madness' portrayed. The educational aspect of the film allowed it to portray a taboo subject which was otherwise forbidden by the Motion Picture Production Code of 1930, and its stricter version imposed by Hollywood studios in July 1934.

"Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" Showcased at Cinemark Theaters Oct. 17

How timely! The classic "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" screens on Wednesday, October 17 at 2PM and 7PM at the Cinemark Theaters, 3601 E 53rd St, Davenport, IA.

When the idealistic young Jefferson Smith (James Stewart) winds up appointed to the United States Senate, he gains the mentorship of Senator Joseph Paine (Claude Rains). However, Paine isn't as noble as his reputation would indicate, and he becomes involved in a scheme to discredit Smith, who wants to build a boys' campsite where a more lucrative project could go. Determined to stand up against Paine and his corrupt peers, Smith takes his case to the Senate floor. Directed by Frank Capra. Released in 1939.

Delightful "Topaze" lights up the screen August 11 at Classic Film Society

The Classic Film Society presents the delightful classic film "Topaze" starring John Barrymore and Myrna Loy on Saturday, August 11, 6:30pm at Marycrest Senior Campus.

Directed by  Harry d'Abbadie d'Arrast, "Topaze" tells the story of an honest and naive schoolteacher who gets a lesson in how the world works outside the classroom, when a rich Baron and his mistress use the teacher's name and outstanding reputation in a crooked business scheme.

Join other movie buffs at Marycrest Senior Campus, 1607 W. 12th St., Davenport, Iowa in the Upham Hall Auditorium.  There is no admission fee. The Classic Film Society presents the classic "It Started with Eve" (1941) starring Deanna Durbin and Bob Cummings on Saturday, July 14 at 6:30 p.m.  Join other movie buffs at Marycrest Senior Campus, 1607 W. 12th St., Davenport, Iowa in the Upham Hall Auditorium.

There is no admission fee.  The Classic Film Society does accept donations of $3/per film or $10 for the entire season.

Kubrick's Classic "Dr. Strangelove" Featured at Figge June 21

Don't miss Stanley Kubrick's classic film "Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb" at Cinema at the Figge in Davenport, Iowa June 21, Thurs.

The evening begins at 5 pm with a social hour serving craft beer. At 6 pm a special talk by photographer Barry Phipps (Between Gravity and What Cheer) will take place prior to the movie. At 7 pm.  "Dr. Strangelove" (1964) will be presented. Free admission. Limited seating.  The Figge Art Musuem is located at 225 W. 2nd St, Davenport, IA.

"Dr. Strangelove" is a film about what could happen if the wrong person pushed the wrong button -- and it played the situation for laughs. U.S. Air Force General Jack Ripper goes completely insane, and sends his bomber wing to destroy the U.S.S.R. He thinks that the communists are conspiring to pollute the "precious bodily fluids" of the American people.

The film stars Peter Sellers, George C. Scott,  and Sterling Hayden. It is 95 minutes long and is rated PG.

 

Classic Films Unveiled for 2018 Season

"Topper" stars Cary Grant and Constance Bennett.

The Classic Film Society has unveiled its 13th Season of the "Classics".  Monthly screenings will screen at Marycrest Senior Campus, 1607 W. 12th St., Davenport, Iowa inthe Upham Hall Auditorium, on Saturdays at 6:30 p.m. There is no admission fee.  The Society does accept donations of $3/per film or $10 for the entire season.

The Season kicks off on May 19 at 6:30 p.m. with "Topper" (1937) a classic favorite starring Cary Grant and Constance Bennett.

Saturday, June 16 features a classic western with a twist, "Westward the Women" (1951) starring Robert Taylor and Denise Darcel.

"It Started with Eve" stars Deanna Durbin and Bob Cummings.

Saturday, July 14 "It Started with Eve" (1941) starring Deanna Durbin and Bob Cummings will screen.

Saturday, August 11 features "Topaze" (1933) starring John Barrymore and Myrna Loy.

Saturday, September 8 "Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House" (1948) starring Cary Grant and Myrna Loy.

The Marycrest Upham Hall Auditorium features 200 cushioned seats and video projection.

Sept 25-Oct 1: Indie International Film Series, Silent Films & Oscar in the Afternoon

"The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" is the featured film at the Independent and International Film Series at Augustana College.  The FREE screening takes place in the Olin Auditorium, 733 35th Street, Rock Island, Illinois.  

The film is based on a crime novel by the late Swedish author and journalist Stieg Larsson.  It was the first book of the Millennium trilogy and became a best-seller in Europe and the United State.

The 158-minute film by David Fincher tells the story of journalist Mikael Blomkvist who is aided in his search for a woman who has been missing for forty years by Lisbeth Salander, a young computer hacker.  "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" (2011) stars Daniel Craig, Ronney Mara, Christopher Plummer and Robin Wright.

"Silver Ochre", a 47-minute series of short silent films ranging from 30 seconds to 4 minutes in length capturing  moments in time, each with their own story accompanied with live music by Thollem Electric and The Visions, is the entertainment for September 26, 9 p.m. at Rozz-Tox, 2108 3rd Avenue, Rock Island, Illinois. Admission is $5-$10.

The "Oscar in the Afternoon" series continues at the Davenport Public Library, 6000 Eastern Avenue, Davenport, Iowa, Wednesday, October 1 at 2:00 p.m.  The free event features a surprise Academy Award-winning film.

The Cinemark Theaters, 3601 East 53rd Street in Davenport will be showcasing classic screen-pleasers: "Gone With the Wind" is presented on Sunday, Sept. 28 2pm and 7pm, and again on Wed. Oct. 1 at 2pm and 7pm. Tickets are $5.50-$9.50.

Mark your calendars for the premiere of the new documentary by Fourth Wall Films and Braking Traffik, Inc. entitled Any Kid Anywhere: Sex Trafficking Survivor Stories premieres at the Putnam Museum & Giant Screen, 1717 W 12th St, Davenport, Iowa, Thursday, October 9, 6:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m.  The premiere event begins at 6:30 p.m. Light snacks will be provided and a cash bar available.  A cocktail hour will precede the film and a Q&A with the survivors will follow the premiere screening. The final week in September offers fabulous DOCUMENTARY screenings throughout QC and most of them are FREE!

Friday-Saturday, Sept. 19-20, a free screening of "Rise Above the Mark" with discussion afterward, begins at 7pm at Western Illinois University, Room 111, 3300 River Drive, Moline.

Saturday, Sept. 20 "Microbirth" screens free at the Davenport Library, 6000 Eastern Ave. 10 a.m.-noon.

Sunday, Sept. 21 The inspiring documentary "N.E.D.: The Movie" shows at 2pm at the Figge Art Museum Theater, 225 W. 2nd St., Davenport.  Free admission with discussion following.

Tuesday, Sept. 23 The documentary "Half the Sky" screens at the Rogalski Center, St. Ambrose, West Lombard & North Ripley Streets, Davenport at 7pm.  This is a free event with discussion following.

NARRATIVE FILMS

The Jewish Film Series continues Sunday, Sept. 21 with "Igor and the Cranes' Journey" at 4pm at the Putnam Giant Screen Theater, 1717 W. 12th St., Davenport. Tickets are $7, $6 for 60+ & military, students free.
