Before Chicago’s notorious Al Capone, there was Rock Island’s gangster John Looney. Truth First Film Alliance is proud to join with the Putnam Museum, and co-sponsors the Bix Jazz Society and the Northwest Illinois Film Office to present Fact vs Fiction & “Road to Perdition” on Sunday, October 6th in the Putnam's National Geographic Giant Screen Theater.
The FREE event features a 1920s jazz performance by The Josh Duffee Jazz Trio, 1920s antique cars, artifacts on display, and John Looney history and photos. In addition to the Giant Screen presentation of the Oscar-winning “Road to Perdition”, for the first time Max Allan Collins and Roger Ruthhart will share the stage for a post-screening discussion and Q&A.
Collins is the author of the graphic novel “Road to Perdition”, and Ruthhart is the co-author of “Citadel of Sin”, a non-fiction account of the Rock Island's John Looney gangster story. Audience members will learn what parts of the movie story are based on real events, and hear how Ruthhart uncovered a stranger-than-fiction local true story, and how Collins adapted the true story into a Rock Island-to-Hollywood work of fiction.
John Looney (1865–1942) was a notorious gangster, lawyer, and newspaper publisher in Rock Island, Illinois. He began as a lawyer but soon turned to establishing a powerful crime syndicate. Looney's criminal empire included gambling, prostitution, extortion, and bootlegging during Prohibition. He also published the Rock Island News, a scandalous newspaper used to blackmail local politicians and rivals. His influence and ruthless methods made him a feared figure in the Quad Cities area.
