If you've already seen Christmas in Connecticut you already know you want to see it again. If not, you have missed out on one of the great Christmas classics of cinema. And NO, I'm not talking about the 1992 made-for-TV remake starring Kris Kristofferson and Dyan Cannon, and directed by (flag on the play!) Arnold Schwarzenegger. Horrors.
Werd: if it was done right the first time, no remakes are permitted!!!
Here's the 411 on the 1945 classic directed by Peter Godfrey in glorious black and white:
A food writer who has lied about being the perfect housewife must try to cover her deception when her boss and a returning war hero invite themselves to her home for a traditional family Christmas. (IMDb.com)
My favorite quote? "Nice firm rump," as spoken by Dennis Morgan (seemingly) to co-star Barbara Stanwick. Her reaction is worth the price of admission. Sydney Greenstreet rounds out a stellar cast, literally and figuratively, that also includes S. Z. Sakall (Casablanca) and Iowan Frank Jenks.
Stanwick and Greenstreet. Does it get any better than this?
My favorite "bit of business"? Stanwick's repeated nervous handling of a china figurine...and the eventual spectacular payoff.
Yes, after seeing this film you too will want to have your own cow named Macushla. I'm not kidding! There is more to be found on Wikipedia, but avoid it if you can until AFTER you've seen the film. There are too many spoilers: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christmas_in_Connecticut
And don't forget, these classic movies at the Rave Theater in Davenport are only $2.00! Stop checking your pulse, it's true! And, that price includes a small drink AND popcorn. I know it sounds crazy...and it is. But maybe it will be a while before the theater realizes it.
We will be there with jingle bells on, so be sure to say, "hello." : )
Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays!
