Shorter days and falling leaves are music to the minds of Halloween lovers.

As some carve pumpkins and pick out costumes, others set out for more serious seasonal undertakings.

There are haunted houses to tour, cemeteries to visit and ghost tales to explore.

In the spirit (ahem) of the season, two Times staffers hit the road to find area places where things are said to go bump in the night.

Fishing for frights, the duo discovered local lore, spooky stories and unnerving places.
