Seberg in "Airport" will be shown on TCM (Turner ClassicMovies) on May 7th at 7PM (CST). Released in 1970, the movie became the highest grossing film of the year. For a time, it played in theaters while Jean's 1969 effort, "Paint Your Wagon," was ending its successful run (the 5th highest grossing film released in 1969). "Airport" was also the last film Jean made in the U.S.
A majority of the blockbuster was filmed on-location at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport which allowed Jean to visit Marshalltown during production. It is interesting to see how small the terminal was then compared to today--and how many aspects of the terminal's original architecture remain (the flooring and mezzanine inside, the ground to roof curvatures lining the front exterior.
"Airport" is considered the grand-daddy-of-all-star disaster films, and it started a streak of such films in the 1970s including "The Poseidon Adventure", "Earthquake", "The Towering Inferno", as well as three "Airport" sequels (and two parodies in the 1980s).
In addition, Jean's debut "Saint Joan" will be aired on TCM on May 19th at 3:00 AM (CST).
Her interpretation of the title character has been debated since the film's release. The fact is that Jean was a teenager playing a teenager, with qualities and wonderment, confidence and doubt that come with those unsure years. Aside from Jean, it's interesting to see how the stage play was transferred to the big screen and each of the actor's interpretation of their roles. Richard Widmark as the Dauphin later said he felt he did not do a very good job. And Jean was highly critical of her interpretation as well. Time, however, has been kinder to Jean as Joan.
