I saw Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey for the first time in 1968 at the Coronet Theater in Davenport, Iowa at the tender age of 9. It convinced me of only one thing: I had just seen the greatest motion picture ever made. Well, that might be overstating it, but I was in awe. I did not understand the subtle meaning of the film, but I was overwhelmed by its visual spendor and sense of adventure. I was also impressed by the film's vision of the future, a future that included routine human space travel.
Even my father, who had alway been a critic of the 1950s science fiction films he grew up on, declared it a great movie. Mom was less decidedly less impressed.
2001 is scheduled for two special showings at the Bijou Theater in Iowa City (details below). See it and remember when science fiction films became the epics we take for granted today.
