"A Christmas Story" Proves it's Never Too Early (or Too Late) to Celebrate Christmas

Just when you thought it was safe to put away the tinsel and toss the fruitcake, A Christmas Story (1983) will be showcased at the Nighswander Theater in Davenport.

Sure, I know, Christmas is over and your Yule log is just a pile of ashes, but you'll not get many chances to see this film with an audience.  Remember?  That's what going to the movies used to be about!  So, put on your red snow suit and waddle on over.

As you know, young Ralphie tries to convince his parents the ideal Christmas gift for him is a Red Ryder BB gun.  Hilarity and battles in the basement with a furnace ensue.  It makes me want to stick my tongue on a frozen sign post...again.

This classic film was the winner of a "Major Award."  Wait, I think that was someone in the movie.

Celebrate "Christmas in Connecticut" at the Rave Theater

If you've already seen Christmas in Connecticut you already know you want to see it again.  If not, you have missed out on one of the great Christmas classics of cinema.  And NO, I'm not talking about the 1992 made-for-TV remake starring Kris Kristofferson and Dyan Cannon, and directed by (flag on the play!) Arnold Schwarzenegger.  Horrors.

Werd: if it was done right the first time, no remakes are permitted!!!

Here's the 411 on the 1945 classic directed by Peter Godfrey in glorious black and white:

My favorite quote?  "Nice firm rump," as spoken by Dennis Morgan (seemingly) to co-star Barbara Stanwick.  Her reaction is worth the price of admission.  Sydney Greenstreet rounds out a stellar cast, literally and figuratively, that also includes S. Z. Sakall (Casablanca) and Iowan Frank Jenks.

Stanwick and Greenstreet.  Does it get any better than this?

My favorite "bit of business"?  Stanwick's repeated nervous handling of a china figurine...and the eventual spectacular payoff.

And don't forget, these classic movies at the Rave Theater in Davenport are only $2.00!  Stop checking your pulse, it's true!  And, that price includes a small drink AND popcorn.  I know it sounds crazy...and it is.  But maybe it will be a while before the theater realizes it.
