They say preparation is key when it comes to installing a vinyl composite tile floor. With the mop boards, carpet, and carpet strips removed, the first order of business was filling small cracks and carpet strip nail damage in the floor.

Before: small floor crack.

After: crack filled!

Carpet strips are wicked! Wear gloves when removing.

And, carpet strips leave these wonderful divots in your concrete floor.

Divots filled.

Furnace ducts (registers removed) in the floor of the rec room.

I found evidence on the floor that the room used to be "salmon." How's that for a classic 1950s color?

More cracks and divots filled.

My final step was to mop the floor with a white vinegar and water solution.

More mopping.

I spent nearly an hour determining where to place the first tile using checks and rechecks that would have made engineers at NASA proud. Why? Because if I get the first one wrong things will really go bad by the time I'm in the next room.

Chalk lines snapped! In Part Three I actually begin to install VCT. Wish me luck!
