A new portrait of Ioway leader Mahaska (White Cloud) has been unveiled by artist Pamela Pantuso of rural Oskaloosa, Iowa. An Oskaloosa Herald article says it depicts Mahaska in his 40s.
Oskaloosa is located in Mahaska County, and is also the site of a stylized statue of the Iowa leader who was assassinated in 1834.
White Cloud's story is featured along with Great Walker's in Lost Nation: The Ioway.
Winter showings of Lost Nation will be posted soon.

The Treaty of December 20, 1836 was also known as the "Platte Purchase."*

These 18" x 24" posters feature Ioway leaders Great Walker (left) and White Cloud as painted by Charles Bird King. Both wanted their people to survive the great changes that were coming upon them, but they disagreed on how best to achieve that goal.
