I enjoyed the photo above and the accompanying article regarding a Wisconsin historical site marker with ties to Ioway history and culture.
Inscription: This is the location of a village occupied between 1000 and 1200 by the Oneota, ancestors of the Winnebago and Ioway. The village site was chosen by the Oneota to make the best use of the area for farming, fishing, hunting, transportation, and defense. The village was surrounded by a stockade and inhabited by 50 to 100 people. It was excavated in 1979 by archaeologists and students from the University of Wisconsin – La Crosse.

Nice reminder of the likely Ioway presence in western Wisconsin in pre-contact times. The sign says the site was occupied around AD 1000-1200 but that's probably in error. The actual date is more like AD 1550-1600 based on more recent radiocarbon dates. See articles in The Wisconsin Archeologist, vol. 75, 1994.
